Romancing the mist

We needed a vacation badly. A chance to get away from the never-ending traffic jams. From pollution. And the hassles and petty irritations of living in a city bursting at the seams.

So like many others, I decided to take a four-day vacation, clubbing 'weekend--sick leave--Gandhi Jayanti'.

We headed to the romantic misty mountains of Coorg, the Scotland of India.

Coorg or Kodagu is situated on Karnataka's Western Ghats. Madikeri, the district headquarters, is spread along the ridge of a mountain, at 3,900 feet above sea level.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

The best way to reach Coorg it turned out was by train from Bangalore to Mysore (three and half hours) and then a bus to Coorg, 120 kms from Mysore. Car travel, even a short journey on a smooth road, makes us go a funny shade of green.

We rose early on Saturday, groggy eyed and sleepy. Lazy creatures that we are, we debated about the advantages of cancelling the trip and going back to bed. But we are thriftier than we are lazy and the train tickets and hotel bookings had already been paid for, so we set off.

After a breakfast of Idlis and Halwa at Bangalore railway station, we boarded the Tirupati-Mysore passenger train at 7.40 am.
