Surging ahead of the competition is a challenge.

What if your colleague is as good as you, yet just one of you will get that much-desired promotion?

i. Rule No 1: Never underestimate the enemy.

ii. Your competitor, of course, is not really the enemy but neither is he or she a friend. However, during your interview, do not target your competitor or his/ her work. That would be in bad taste.

iii. Be very focussed about your goals and what is expected of you.

iv. Bring innovation into your work and project this factor in your interview.

v. Do not be isolated; project the spirit of your team and involve your people. This is a leadership quality and will help you surge ahead.

vi. View the bigger picture by understanding what is required beyond your job profile. Keep abreast of developments in the markets, the clients, the economy and your people.

vii. Always review and analyse your work. Be critical.

viii. Address the stress factor; make sure it does not affect your mind, body and emotions.
