Jaya Bachchan wins Best Supporting Actress

Ronjita Kulkarni in Mumbai

The venue: Bandra Kurla's MMRDA grounds.

The occasion: Manikchand Filmfare Awards 2001.

Hosted by punster Javed Jaffery and Jalwa Achana Puran Singh, the futuristic glass and jagged-edged sets were witness to Saif Ali Khan winning the Best Performance in a Comic Role for endearing role as Samir in Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai, and Akshaye Khanna as Siddharth in the same film.

British pop group Right Said Fred regaled audiences with songs like This is the last song (for you), and their chartbusting I'm too sexy.

The Best Supporting Actress went to Jaya Bachchan for essaying the role of Nandini Raichand in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

And the Best Actor in a Villainous Role was Akshay Kumar for his Jekyll and Hyde rendition in Ajnabee.
