After his successful debut in Love Story (1981) and his brief resurrection in Naam (1986), Kumar Gaurav disappeared from Hindi cinema. His last film, Mazhar Khan's Gang, was a disaster.

Kaante, co-produced by brother-in-law Sanjay Dutt (Gaurav is married to Namrata Dutt), has him playing a computer whiz.
