The spectacular scenery -- the sweeping green plains below, encircled by hundreds of sky-piercing snow-capped mountains and glaciers -- contributed to a truly breathtaking experience.

Done with that, our tour guide decided to give us a taste of adventure on water on return. We got off the chopper at the foothills of the Southern Alps and in minutes were on a speed boat -- they call it Alpine Jet -- breezing down the Waimakariri River.

It was like an F1 car driving in water. Another heart-in-the-mouth experience as Garth, the boat driver, sped over four inches, yes four inches, of water, in his specially designed sped boat.

You had to literally hold on tight as Garth breezed around the river and making several 180 degree spin!
