A tale of two Titans

Steve Waugh   Brian Lara

Steve Waugh's skills are aplenty. But unlike Don Bradman, Pele, Magic Johnson and Jack Nicklaus, they have never set him apart from his contemporaries though tales of heroism about him abound.

His heart and his leadership more than match those of any sportsperson through the ages. And that is what makes him a special cricketer. Each time he steps on to the playing field you know, without doubt, he will give it his 100 per cent.

"Records," as Sir Garfield Sobers said when Brian Lara scored 375, "are just there to be broken."

As a youngster, Lara achieved a lot early on. His talent was blinding and so was his strokeplay. Records were left in tatters as he blazed a new trail with virtually every innings. But somewhere, somehow, things went astray. Lara's love for the game wavered and he often found himself wondering about his future.
