A tale of two Titans

Steve Waugh   Brian Lara

A lot has been said about Waugh's stroke-play, especially about those he likes to avoid. In Test cricket, it is precisely the kind of control you need to survive. He learnt his lessons quickly after a tough baptism, but, thereafter, never looked back. At present, he averages 49.33, with 29 centuries and 46 fifties in 157 Tests, a world record! A considerably greater return than some of the more talented blokes around.

Former West Indies coach Roger Harper said about Lara during the World Cup, "There is not much you can teach him. The important thing is to see that he gets the work and practice he needs to go and display his style."

Considered the world's best batsman, application and focus has always been Lara's biggest problem. At present, he averages 49.72, with 19 centuries and 37 fifties in 91 Tests. His average is down from his years of glory, but he has found his calling again.
