The Jammu and Kashmir state cabinet on Thursday evening decided to declare six districts, Jammu, Doda, Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch, as 'disturbed' under the Armed Forces (J&K) Special Powers Act, 1990.
The Centre had decided to declare the six districts disturbed after a meeting on Wednesday night.
Immediately after his arrival from New Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah chaired an emergency special meeting of the state cabinet at the heavily guarded civil secretariat.
The decision of the cabinet has been sent to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Girish Chandra Saxena, for approval.
Talking to reporters after the meeting Abdullah said the cabinet decision would help the armed forces in combatting militancy in the Jammu region better.
Buttressing his point, he said the security forces have been able to tackle militancy effectively in the Kashmir valley, which is already under the Armed Forces (J&K) Special Powers Act, 1990.
