Enron's notice 'improper': Deshmukh

The Maharashtra government on Saturday termed Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company's preliminary termination notice to the state electricity board as an 'improper step'.

"It is not proper to issue a PTN when the renegotiations aimed at bringing down the power tariff are on," Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said reacting to the US multinational's latest step.

DPC could have put forward their views before the renegotiations panel headed by former bureaucrat Madhav Godbole, Deshmukh told mediapersons.

The chief minister said legal experts would be consulted on the notice served by DPC to decide the future course to be adopted over the Enron move.

To a query, Deshmukh said the government still feels that the impasse could be resolved only through discussions between DPC and the MSEB.

The chief minister said "exorbitant power tariff" was the only core issue and it could be resolved through discussions alone.

Deshmukh said the government has not defaulted on its payment to the US energy giant except for the "disputed bills".

"MSEB has also adhered to the contractual obligations and we still believe that DPC will come for the discussion," he added.
