In 1990, Gabby briefly changed the status quo when she beat Steffi 6-2, 7-6 in the US Open final. But it was the only Grand Slam she would win in her popular but underachieving career.
After playing on and off, she retired in 1996, aged just 26. Steffi was still in the middle of her 22 Grand Slam title spree.
