Complete Coverage: Rafa rocks Monte Carlo
Born in Chicago in 1965, she made a promising start when she reached the quarter-final at Wimbledon and the US Open semi-final aged just 16.
She reached as high as number two in the world before shoulder injuries forced her to retire in 1987, at the age of 22.
In an interview in 2003, she said she was never committed to being a top-ranked player. She started visiting hospitals away from the tournament sites and found purpose in her life.
In 2006, she became an Anglican Dominican nun.
