Germany's Nick Heidfeld had an impressive outing, finishing fourth for BMW Sauber
He overtook Alonso on the first corner, but then suffered traffic problems and missed the podium by 38 seconds.
His team mate Robert Kubica suffered stuck gearbox and was forced to retire on lap 37 when fourth.
