Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, the rookie stepping into Alonso's shoes at Renault, had a far from impressive debut and finished 10th.
Renault team chief Flavio Briatore criticised the Finn after he dished out an error-strewn performance, running wide and spinning.
"Heikki's performance? I think everybody was watching on TV. I don't need to protect anybody. It was rubbish," Briatore said.
