Rains wreak havoc in West Bengal

He said that 70-80 lifeboats with life jackets had been pressed into service.

Villages on both sides of the National Highway 60, which connects Kharagpur to Chennai, were under water and marooned people had taken shelter on roofs of houses and temples and on trees.

The state government has provided for one lakh drinking water pouches for distribution among the marooned people, he said.
