Rains wreak havoc in West Bengal

June 19, 2008
The rains, lashing the area since Sunday, stopped today morning. It has rained a record 700 mm till Wednesday against an annual rainfall of 1600 mm. The situation has been compounded by the discharge of 3.5 lakh cusec water from the Chandil-Galudih reservoir in adjoining Jharkhand.

Army personnel in 50 mechanised and speedboats carried out relief and rescue operations in the three worst-affected areas of Sabang, Pingla and Narayangarh blocks, Nigam said.

The Army, Nigam said, was trying to provide food and drinking water to the marooned people and rescue them if possible.

In two areas of Nayagram and Kalaikunda, a helicopter has been requisitioned for airdropping of food as boats have failed to reach the areas.

At least 10,000 people have been rescued so far, Nigam said. Many places have remained inaccessible and the army will try to reach them today.
