McCain hits back

August 29, 2008
After finishing with a quote from scripture, Obama was joined onstage by his wife Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia and Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden and his wife Jill.

Within minutes of the speech's conclusion, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds issued a statement.

"Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama," Bounds said. "The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be president."

McCain, on his 72nd birthday, is set to choose a Vice President in Dayton, Ohio, one of the November 4 election's crucial swing states.

It's being speculated that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney or Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty will fill be chosen as the Republican running mate. Next week, McCain will formally accept his party's nomination at the Republican National Convention in St Paul, Minnesota.

Earlier, as part of a five-hour extravaganza on the fourth and final day of the convention, former vice president and Nobel laureate Al Gore revved up the crowd by pointing out that things would have been much different had he won the presidential polls against Bush in 2000.

"Today, we face essentially the same choice we faced in 2000, though it may be even more obvious now, because John McCain, a man who has earned our respect on many levels, is now openly endorsing the polices of the Bush-Cheney White House and promising to actually continue them," he said.

"We must seize this opportunity to elect Barack Obama president of the United States," he told the crowd.

"The same policies all over again? Hey, I believe in recycling, but that's ridiculous," he said, drawing a loud, long laugh. "The question facing us, simply put, is will we seize this opportunity for change?"
