Bringing up Sunita Williams

October 25, 2007
Sunita, the believer
She got admission to Columbia and Yale University but she preferred to go to the Naval Academy. She doesn't have any regrets because she likes the disciplined life. She met her husband at the academy.

Her marriage day was so beautiful. On that day our garden was blooming and so many birds were singing. We still, believe it was out of this world. We have a beautiful memory of those days. After marriage, Sunita has always invited us to all her postings in different places. She would show us everything and explain what she is doing.

I have written a diary of our camping days. How my children were asking me questions about Gandhiji, about India and my family.

In 1947-48, I was in jail for five months for participating in a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh programme. In jail, I read about Gandhiji’s doctrine of non-violence and I shared those things with Sunita. She strongly believes in God. She keeps a simplified version of Gita and reads it for inspiration.
