Bringing up Sunita Williams

October 25, 2007
But once I landed in America, I forgot all those things. It is said that desire is blind. I married an American girl but God is kind and her nature is superb. She learnt Gujarati cooking for me. She makes dal-bhat and shak everyday. Instead of roti she serves me bread. She also cooks samosas and bhajiyas.

Sunita's America darshan
In 1976, our family went for camping from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana to Illinois to Iowa to all the way to Yellowstone Park. We also used to take weekly trips to nearby places. Till she was 11 years old, Sunita was crazy about knowing things. She would frequently ask questions. She would attentively listen to the Ramayan and Mahabharat. She was a normal child and not stubborn. All her childhood friends are still around in her life.

I don't recollect ever ticking her off. Whenever my wife and I would talk about our children we certainly felt that Sunita was different. Her nature was so serene and simple. Her school teachers, swimming coach would praise her. She was popular among her friends.

I remember one incident quite clearly. Once we went for camping when Sunita was six years old. She made a sand castle and showed it to me. She has written Ram on that castle. I had tears in my eyes.
