'Ladki ko chod dijiye. Take this blank cheque'

November 02, 2007
Ashok Todi told her, "You should not have done this. You should have informed us. Yeh shadi hum log nahin mante hai." Priyanka said, "But papa, we are already married."

Ashok Todi reminded Priyanka how she had told him she will never marry. Priyanka argued with her father how he was looking for a suitable boy. She said he would have got her married anyway. She said the only difference is that now she is married to a boy of her choice. Priyanka was not crying at all. She was looking quite happy and arguing with confidence. She had no regret that she married a Muslim.

Sarogi told us that this is not the way to get married. Nobody allows or accepts a Hindu-Muslim marriage, he said. He insisted that we explain to the newly-married couple not to honour the marriage.

The men in my family told Todi that they could not do anything as it was the children's decision. They said if Priyanka wants to go back, she can surely leave. But they said they cannot force her to go back home.

They also said they would try to persuade her and if she leaves they will not apply any pressure on her.

But, we also clarified that we don't believe Priyanka has done anything wrong in marrying Rizwan. Pyar kiya, Shadi kiya. This is not wrong at all. More importantly, they have married under Indian law.

Then Ashok Todi told Rizwan and his uncles, "Ladki ko chod dijiye. Take this blank cheque." (Leave the girl, take this blank cheque.)

Part II: How Priyanka was pressurised to return home
