The British lie quietly in Meerut

'Woh daur kuch aur tha, Aaj kuch aur hai, Duniya adalti badalti rehti hai' (Those were different times; today is a different time. The world keeps changing). The words come not from a philosopher or poet, but from a man called Robert Robinson, entrusted to protect the graves of British citizens and soldiers who died during the mutiny of 1857.
In his mid-50s, Robinson, caretaker of St John's Cemetery near the Cant area of Meerut, lives all alone. He has only the graves for company.
