Surpanakha

March 2, 2007

In the Ramayana, to honour King Dashrath's promise to his wife Kaikeyi, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spend 14 years in vanvaas.

One day, while living in the forest, Lanka king Ravan's sister Surpanakha sees Rama and falls in love with the handsome prince. She approaches him boldly and asks him to marry her.

Rama tells her that she should try and entice Lakshmana. Lakshmana in turn tells her to focus on Rama. When Surpanakha realises that the two brothers are making fun of her, she loses her temper and pounces on Sita who she thinks is the reason Rama is spurning her advances.

Lakshmana intervenes and cut off Surpanakha's nose and ears, disfiguring her. Surpanakha runs crying to her powerful brother and describes Sita's immeasurable beauty to him. The rest, as they say, is a glorious epic.
