Aboard the USS Nimitz

July 10, 2007
We were then taken up to the flight deck.

I remembered seeing Top Gun, memories came back, and here I was almost in a scene from the film.

There were 45 aircraft parked on a four-and-a-half-acre flight deck! They park them in triangular formations, probably to save space.

I believe 90 fixed-wing aircraft, including the F/A-18 Super Hornets and helicopters, are aboard. The facilities enable the aircraft to take off every 30 seconds!

Elevators to ferry aircraft up and down different levels are also installed.

Many of the planes are over 25 years old and quite weather-beaten. Interestingly, the pilot currently manning a plane has his name inscribed on it.
