'I listen to my Panchayat leader before I vote'

April 24, 2007
Aziz Rahman is waiting patiently by his cycle rickshaw.

Though he never went to school, all his four children study. For the rickshaw, he pays a rent of Rs 20 a day. Above that, he averages Rs 100 a day. He pays Rs 150 a month for his rented home.

A native of Bihar, Aziz has worked in Moradabad for the last 10 years. "Earlier I voted for Lalu Yadav; now he is the railway minister. Last election, I voted for Nitish Kumar."

"I do not have a vote here. If I did, I would vote for the winner. If 10 people in my neighbourhood told me to vote for one party, I would vote for them. I listen to my local Panchayat leader before I decide my vote," he says.
