Winners & losers: Hillary Clinton

November 8
Hillary Rodham Clinton made history when, as her husband prepared to leave the White House after surviving impeachment in 2000, she launched her US Senate bid in New York, a state in which she had never lived, and took on New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

But Giuliani dropped out due to health reasons, and she defeated his replacement, Long Island Rep Rick Lazio, by a huge margin.

This time round, she won 67 per cent of the votes. Her Republican opponent John Spencer won 31. In fact, Clinton won every region of New York, including the once-solidly Republican rural upstate region, 58 percent to 39 percent. She also emerged victorious in a hypothetical presidential match-up with Giuliani, with 57 percent of New York voters favouring Clinton and 34 percent the former mayor.

For Indians, her victory is sweet music: in 2004, Senator Hillary Clinton co-founded and was co-chair of the US Senate India Caucus.
