Gajinder came into prominence after he hijacked an Indian Airlines flight to Lahore in 1981 to protest against the arrest of Sikh separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale for his alleged role in the murder of Hind Samachar editor Lala Jagat Narain.
Gajinder was given a life sentence, but served only a few years in jail before being granted asylum in Pakistan.
