Celebrating the life of Guru Nanak

After his last great journey, Guru Nanak Dev Ji settled in Kartapur, on the banks of the Ravi, in Punjab where he continued to teach for 15 years. His followers came from all over to listen and spend time with him. Slowly his followers, irrespective of whether they were Hindu or Muslim, became known as or Sikhs. They, in turn, began calling him Guru, or teacher.

The Guru told his followers to be householders, instead of living apart from the world as hermits or priests. He instituted the practice of the common meal, or langar, where everyone dined together regardless of origin.
