US President George W Bush, French President Jacques Chirac, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan were present at the event. Dr Singh (seen here with President Putin) was elegantly dressed in a black bandh-gala with his now trademark blue turban.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the celebration. The queen was present at the celebration in the Channel Islands, the only part of England occupied by Germany in the war.
With such a galaxy of leaders in the city, the Russian police more or less closed down Moscow two days before the celebration.
Some 20,000 police officers were out on the streets. Much of the city centre near Red Square and the Kremlin was blocked off with barricades.
