'I don't know if there is any parade in the world with such variety'

It was in 1964 that I first attended the Republic Day parade in Delhi, then as a NCC cadet from my school in Kerala.

Now exactly 40 years later I was here again, this time to lead the parade. It is indeed a great privilege and honour. When I was posted with the President's Guards in the late 1960s, I was involved in organising the parade, but never got to take part in it.

I don't know if there is any parade around the world with such variety and so many organisations.

In Paris, I have witnessed the French National Day parade. The difference there is that a contingent from a neighbouring country also takes part in the parade. In 2001, when the Spanish king was the chief guest, there was a Spanish contingent. It is not a bad idea for us to consider for the future.

Our Republic Day parade is really big, massive in logistical and security terms. We in the Delhi area give the overall coordination to the Delhi police and other agencies involved. [Major General Mathew is General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area]

The army, which is the major participant, has been preparing for almost a month. The army personnel and equipment reached Delhi sometime in December and began preparations.

As told to Josy Joseph
