Ujjain is in western Madhya Pradesh, some 55 km from Indore.
Ujjain, or City of Victory, is the modern name for Ujjayini. Legend has it that the godlike King Shiva of Avanti commemorated his victory over the demon-ruler of Tripura or Tripuri on the banks of the Narmada by changing the name of his capital Avantipura to Ujjayini (meaning, one who conquers with pride).
Through the ages the temple of Mahakaleshwar and the holy Kshipra have drawn pilgrims to Ujjain. The atmosphere turns especially festive during the Simhastha Kumbh, with sadhus and sants of various persuasions thronging the holy city.
