The low point in Schwarzenegger's campaign came when six women told the Los Angeles Times that the action star had groped and fondled them on movie sets and in other settings over the last three decades.
His opponents quickly seized on the opportunity, dubbing him a threat to women. Schwarzenegger admitted that he had 'behaved badly' with many women over the years, but said he did not mean to offend them.
Questioning the timing of the allegations, he accused his opponents of attempting a smear campaign. "When I am governor I want to prove to the women that I will be a champion for the women, a champion of the women," he said at a rally in San Diego.
But it was the wham-bam star who had the last laugh with the Californians giving him a fresh role.
