Beginning September 20, 2003, nearly 1,000 people boarded buses in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Chicago, Houston, Miami and Boston and criss-crossed the US over the next 12 days. Called the Freedom Riders' American Tour, they covered about 20,000 miles and stopped at more than 100 places.
On October 3, they converged at the Liberty State Park, overlooking the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
