In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, families arrange dolls on steps and prepare an elaborate spread of lamps and flowers. Women exchange coconuts, clothes and sweets. Scenes culled from various Puranas are displayed.
On Vijayadashami, an idol of the Goddess Chamundeswari, family deity of the erstwhile maharajas, is taken out in a procession from the Mysore palace.
