Dussehra is a grand occasion in Mysore. Caparisoned elephants lead a colourful procession through the city's streets.

The 16th century rulers of the Vijayanagar empire started the tradition of celebrating Dussehra with such grandeur. After the disintegration of the empire, the maharajas of Mysore continued the tradition.
