'The myth that the thumri was just meant to be sung by nautch girls has been broken now,' Girija Devi, who has done a great deal to popularise the thumri, told UNI in Lucknow this February. 'The gurus taught it to everyone be it a saint, pauper, members of royal families or nautch girls. And everybody used to sing it then. I feel the thumri is the best medium of expressing thoughts. It is the only style of singing in which I can express Lord Krishna playing his flute in ten different styles.'

'Recently one of my disciples in the US did her PhD in 2,000 thumri themes,' the singer who turned 74 on May 8 said. ' I am proud to have disciples in France, Italy, the US. This is the best way in which I can keep my music going on after I am not there. I have seen working women taking a backseat after 50, but I will continue to sing and conduct shows, as long as I can and my voice permits me.'
