Unlike many artistes who prefer to let their music express their opinions, Girija Devi is often outspoken.
Most recently she condemned the government's decision to nominate Hema Malini to the Rajya Sabha.
'Hema Malini ko Rajya Sabha ka sadasya bana rahe hain, ka karihein sansad mein ja ke, Durga bani ke nachihain ka? (They nominated Hema Malini to the Rajya Sabha. What will she do in Parliament? Will she dance like Durga?),' Girija Devi asked.
Girija Devi, whose white sari, large bindi and paan-stained (she says she has been addicted to paan since she was 12) teeth are a trademark, has been honoured by both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
