'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,' Armstrong said as he became the first member of the homo sapien race to set foot on another celestial object.

It was 2256 EDT. July 20, 1969.

'Magnificent desolation,' Buzz Aldrin (that is him in the picture) declared when he joined Armstrong 19 minutes later.

Collins stayed back in the Command and Service Module, Columbia, and became the first person to orbit the Moon solo.
