The windblown appearance of the US flag on the windless lunar surface confounded many.

The truth was that the rod to hold the flag out horizontally played truant and would not extend fully. Hence, the flag ended up with a slight waviness.

It took an effort to erect the staff as it was difficult to penetrate the lunar soil beyond 6 to 8 inches.
