'The Greeks and later the Romans came to trade. In spices, gems, ivory and silks, slaves and animals to sell to wealthy aristocrats back home. Harappan artefacts show there was contact between India, Mesopotamia and Egypt in the third century BC.

'Trade and commerce continued to flourish during the Mauryan dynasty and the Mughal period. Later the Europeans arrived, starting with Vasco de Gama. They came to trade and then conquer and finally to rule.'
