'The Zamorin of Calicut, and, later on, Shivaji and Kanhoji Angre were valiant heroes in battles to maintain Indian control in the Indian Ocean.

Finally, the British firmly established their supremacy. In various avatars, there existed a marine force consisting of British officers and Indian sailors. This was first named the Indian Marine, later Royal Indian Marine and finally, Royal Indian Navy.

In 1950, when Indian became a Republic, the word 'royal' was dropped giving birth to the Indian Navy.'
