Jain Commission was a waste of resources, says Maran

Former Union industry minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Murasoli Maran today dismissed as "waste of resources", the Jain Commission report which reportedly exonerated the DMK of any involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

"Who is Justice Jain to exonerate or not to exonerate the DMK?" Maran asked when his views on the Commission's final report were sought by private television channels.

Reacting to the publication of excerpts of the report in an English daily today, Maran said the people knew they (the DMK) were not involved in the assassination. The Central Bureau of Investigation's special investigation team had not charge-sheeted any DMK member. Of the 26 accused convicted for the assassination by the special court, no one was a DMK member.

Answering a question on the indictment of the party in the Commission's interim report, Maran said the Congress wanted an election and used the report as an excuse to withdraw support to the United Front government. He claimed the publication of the excerpts itself was an edited version, since some "explosive" details had been held back.
