Cinematic masterpieces from a master-storyteller

Writers may come and go but a legend always stays. That's the case with writer Rangarajan [see inset], known more popularly in Tamil under the pseudonym 'Sujatha'.

The man with magic in his fingers and a sharp, pithy style wrote countless novels, short-stories and essays that revolutionised the mindset of an entire generation, and was the favourite of film-makers like Mani Ratnam and Shankar.

As Gandhi Krishna's Anandha Thandavam, based on Sujatha's novel Pirivom Santhippom is getting ready to hit the screens, we look at some of the master-storyteller's other works that were made into movies:

Gayathri (1977)

Directed by R Pattabhiraman, this adaptation followed the life of Gayathri -- a woman married to an unscrupulous man -- who suddenly discovers that her so-called happy, married life is in reality a complicated web of lies.

Played by Sridevi and Rajnikanth, the movie shows Sujatha's complete understanding of the psyche of women and establishes his comfort-levels when dealing with complex characterizations and unconventional characters.
