'I wanted to make the film only in Tamil but here I am, making a bilingual'

Whom did you show the script first?

I took the script to Maddy [Madhavan] first.

Why him?

Whenever I thought of Manohar, only Madhavan's face came to my mind. He is a simple man, scared and confused. He is vulnerable too, which I saw in Maddy. It is not the characters that he has done that told me he was the most suited as Manohar, but Maddy's face itself.

Manohar does no heroism in the film. Maybe you can say the only heroism is his love for his family.

Did Madhavan like script?

Yes, he did. We took the script to Ad Labs. They liked the script so much that they wanted to make the film in two languages -- Hindi and Tamil. They said it was a universal subject and not culture-centric. I wanted to make the film only in Tamil but here I am, making a bilingual.
