Sure, Batman has always been about the villains, so much so that Jack Nicholson got top billing over Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's first film, but Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight really was all about the bad guy.

Tongue slithering through scarred lips and a faceful of badly applied white makeup, The Joker dominated the screen and our imaginations in every way. The character leaped off the screen and began haunting us as he taunted the Batman...with every macabre grin a heartbreaking reminder that we would never see him again. Heath Ledger, we miss you.
