Top directors of Southern Cinema, 2008

The year 2008 was not an exceptionally good one for the southern film industry. But there were some brilliant films -- like Girish Kasaravalli's Kannada film Gulabi Talkies and Mohankrishna Indraganti's Telugu film Ashta Chamma.

Tamil cinema saw some great talent from new filmmakers like Sashi Kumar, Mysskin and Sasi while Malayalam cinema saw directors like M G Sasi.

We take a look at the best directors of 2008.

Sashi Kumar
Film: Subramaniapuram

Sashi Kumar was an assistant director to Bala when he struggled hard to get a good theatre for his first Tamil film Sethu. Life was tough when he assisted Ameer as well. So he knew how difficult it would be to get a producer for an offbeat film.

He produced his own film, Subramaniyapuram, starring newcomers. When other actors refused to act in his film, he decided to act too.

Though very violent, the film went on to impress the critics and win the hearts of audiences.
