'Since Sonu was playing an aghora, I used black'

When you took up the project, did you really anticipate that the film would be this huge hit?

We prayed that it would be a hit for Shyam. He's a perfectionist and hence there is no definition of right for him. He is passionate and dedicated. Being a perfectionist myself, I could understand it.

What is the kind of research did you do for Arundhati?

There wasn't enough photographic evidence of the middle ages in India (non-coastal belt). We had to rely on the jewellery and paintings. In the South, I noticed the use of chunky gold jewellery, while in the North stones were used. I also spoke to old families, used my imagination and linked them all.

You dressed Anushka, Sonu Sood and Sayaji Shinde. Did you use any defining colour tones for them? For example, Sonu was dressed in black?

The basic colour palette was small. Most of the colours used were vegetable dyes. For Anushka [particularly Jejamma's character] I used maroon, mustard, green, pista green and pink.

Since Sonu was playing an aghora, I used black. For the fakir, I used white. I studied the fakirs and even bought clothes and accessories from them. I had to create that mystic aura around the fakir.
