What we do is, we make films that we believe in, and we create characters we are familiar with. All the characters you see in these films are from real life. When a film is interesting, the audience, whether it belongs to a city or a village, will accept the film.

When I interviewed Sashi Kumar, the director of Subramaniapuram, he said as he could not get any producer, he produced the film himself. How was your experience?

Actually, I had done all the work ready before meeting the producer; I had the bound script with me, the names of actors, and even the names of locations where I was going to shoot the film. The first producer I met became the producer of Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu.

How did a kabadi player from Pazhani become a filmmaker?

My father was crazy about films. My uncle even made a film ten years ago but it didn't see the light of day. I was also crazy about films like these two. When I decided to come to Chennai after Standard 12, my family was totally against it. Even my uncle told me not to waste my life on films but then I was sure that I would be a filmmaker one day. I reached here when I was 18 and it took me 12 years to make my first film. And I have no regrets.
