From Dev babu to Dev D

What would Devdas be without Chandramukhi? Like a glimmer of hope and colour, the golden-hearted prostitute Chandramukhi adorns Dev's debilitating existence. Even though she knows her affections will never get reciprocated, she continues to be by his side.

The sensitivity and dedication in Vyjyanthimala's understanding of Chandramukhi's unconditional sentiments is inspiring to say the least. Besides her emotional histrionics, the gifted dancer performs intricately to numbers like Ab aage teri marzi and Jise tu kubool karle. When awarded with Filmfare's 'Best Supporting Actress' trophy over 'Best Actress' for her work in the film, Vyjyanthimala openly expressed her displeasure.

Madhuri Dixit, however, had no such issues. The actress, too, won the same award for the same role. Trust the actress to not let the resplendent appearance of her Chandramukhi distract the viewer from her injured looks, after being repeatedly rejected by the man she worships. Her measured delivery and breathtaking dance moves continue to remind us why she's so special.

Will French-speaking Kalki Koechilin live up to these legends? It's an impossible comparison. But Kalki, who plays Chanda, a sex worker with a crystal-clear soul, is game. The newcomer not only brushed up on her Hindi skills but also watched a lot of films about flesh trade to get the nuances of the character she plays.
