From Dev babu to Dev D

Bimal Roy's Devdas marked the debut of Suchitra Sen in Hindi cinema. The delicacy and grace of her soft-spoken albeit self-respecting Paro continues to be a text-book example of playing a character with conviction and elegance.

In one of her career best avatars, Aishwarya Rai became the glamorous face of Paro. Besides looking like a million bucks and dressing in elaborate Neeta Lulla creations, Ash struck with her magnificent screen presence, making even the most ridiculous scenes look important.

Predominantly a director's actress, Ash displayed her tendency to deliver under director Bhansali's ardour with this follow-up act to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam's Nandini.

Interestingly, playing Paro did her good in more ways than one. Devdas enjoyed an out-of-competition screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival marking the beginning of Aishwarya's first of many outings at the event.

Dev D opts for a rank newcomer, Chandigarh-based Mahi Gill to essay the iconic object of Devdas' affection. Gill, who previously dabbled in Punjabi films, is nothing like the demure Paro you are accustomed to. Bold, beautiful and care-a-damn, this one likes to hurt where it hurts the most.
