Like Rubina, Azhar was asked to give a screen test, and mouth some dialogues. He was selected and shooting started from the very next day.
The first few days was busy but later, the kids found time to play on the sets. "I made many friends on the sets but all of them were older than me. I made friends with people, who worked on the sets," Azhar says.
While he seems happy about the experience, his mother is upset with the Slumdog controversy that has erupted. "Why are people pulling us in this controversy?" she asks in an agitated voice. "People tease us that 'yeh zhopadpatti ka kutta hai' because he worked in Slumdog. But these people (the Slumdog team) helped me when I needed it the most. Did anyone else come to my help? People make a mockery of my poverty! But the Slumdog team made my son an actual human being -- they lifted him from his rags. Whatever is shown in the movie is not wrong."
