'Supporting characters are of great importance'

How different are the characters of Jayaram in your recent films like Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Manassinakkare and Bhagyadevatha?

Roy, which was Jayaram's character in Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal was about a lazy youth who learned the hard realities of his life after marriage, thanks to his intelligent father.

Reji in Manassinakkare is a witness to the fact that we all end up alone as we get old.

Benny in Bhagyadevatha is a kind of an idiot who thinks that hefty dowry is what one must look forward to in a marriage.

What has been the major changes that you have found in Malayalam films in these years?

For me, the supporting characters are of great importance and they have a considerable role in the narration. We have lost quite a number of the actors who did them, in the last few years, like Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Shankaradi, Kuthiravattam Pappu, Krishnankutty Nair and Philomina to name a few. I miss them all every time I venture out to make a film.
